Tianjin Port's 3.6% Hides a Negative September
Tianjin Port's 3.6% Hides a Negative September
Executive Summary
Tianjin Port Group moved 390 million tonnes of cargo (+1.3%) and 19.61 million TEU (+3.6%) in the first nine months of 2026. The January-to-August line was 17.51 million TEU, +4.8%. Here's the thing: subtract one from the other and September alone lands near 210,000 TEU against roughly 222,000 TEU a year earlier. Put simply, the month was negative even though the year to date was not.

Overview
Both figures are year-on-year, both use 2025 as the base, so you can work backwards. Take 19.61 million TEU minus 17.51 million TEU and September comes out at about 210,000 TEU. Divide 19.61 by 1.036 and last year's nine months were roughly 18.93 million TEU; divide 17.51 by 1.048 and last year's eight months were about 16.71 million TEU. The gap is 222,000 TEU.
So September ran about 5% below the same month last year. The official release does not publish a monthly figure. This is our arithmetic from two cumulative readings published by Tianjin Port Group on 2026-10-20 and in the October print of Hong Kong Economic Journal. Both read to the nearest 10,000 TEU, so allow a point either side.
Why should you care? Terminal resources are planned against boxes, not tonnes. If September really turned, berths, chassis and yard space get looser in Q4. That is a better moment to renegotiate gate windows and free time than September was.

Key Details
Container growth of 3.6% is 2.8 times cargo growth of 1.3%. That ratio is the story: the incremental tonnage has been containerised cargo, while iron ore and coal set the scale but not the growth. One month earlier the ratio was 3.2, so the box side is slowing later than the tonnage side, not avoiding it.
The landward side keeps growing. The Shuozhou dry port in Shanxi opened in August 2026, taking the inland network to 20 dry ports, 8 inland container depots and 48 rail-sea shuttle services. Rail-sea volume rose 5.3% over January to September, and China-Europe (and Central Asia) services reached 579 departures. The second track bundle at Tianjin Container Central Station lifted through-rail capacity to 80,000 TEU.
The seaward side reads differently: 152 container services, of which 91 are foreign trade. Route count held while box growth dropped a notch. Ships were still calling. Cargo was not.

Looking Ahead
First, October's monthly TEU. You will not have to wait for a monthly release — subtract the next cumulative reading the same way. Above 220,000 TEU and September was a timing artefact. Two months near 210,000 TEU and demand is genuinely softer.
Second, the foreign-trade route count. It stands at 91 of 152. If it climbs past 93 while volumes stay flat, carriers are adding calls into a market that is not there. If it holds still, carriers are watching the same numbers you are.
