India Lanes: Why 20ft and 40ft Rates Now Move Apart

Executive Summary

Shanghai-India spot rates have more than doubled since July. JNPA and Chennai now price 20ft and 40ft in opposite directions, and that gap is worth up to $150 a box.

Overview

The Loadstar, citing market data on Sep 28, put Shanghai-JNPA (Jawaharlal Nehru Port) average spot rates up about 20% since late August. That works out to $3,700/TEU and $3,850/FEU. Shanghai-Chennai moved harder, up roughly 25% month on month, at $3,600/TEU and $3,900/FEU.

Here's the thing. Chennai is $100 cheaper on a 20ft and $50 dearer on a 40ft. Get the box size wrong and you give away $150 a box. That margin is yours, not the carrier's.

For context, the China-India spot rate has more than doubled since July 2026. You are quoting roughly twice what you quoted three months ago. A customer waving last year's contract price is not a negotiation you can win.

Key Details

Indian government data published on Sep 15 shows imports from China reached $65.49 billion between April and August 2026, against $51.56 billion a year earlier. That is 27.01% growth, and China was India's largest source of imports across those five months.

But 27.01% more cargo does not explain a rate that doubled. The catch is space, not volume.

Jitendra Srivastava, chief executive of Mumbai-based Triton Logistics & Maritime, put it this way: India's PLI-driven manufacturing push has raised demand for Chinese intermediate parts, electronic components and capital equipment. The mix of cargo changed. The tonnage did not.

I agree with that read. Intermediate goods and capital equipment do not consolidate well. A half-full 40ft still takes a full slot, so this cargo eats far more space per dollar of value than consumer goods do. Space tightens, and rates run ahead of volume.

Looking Ahead

Ask the box size first, not the rate. If the shipment fills a 40ft, Chennai costs you $50 more than JNPA. If it only fills a 20ft, Chennai saves you $100. Pin the port and the box size down with your customer, then quote. Do not pick for them.

Second, shorten the validity on your quote. Chen Xiang, general manager of Shanghai Tianjun Shipping, told press in early October that Jebel Ali rates went from $8,100 on late-August sailings to as high as $11,650 now, climbing $800 to $1,000 a week. That is the Middle East lane. India has doubled since July and is moving no slower.

Bottom line: a 30-day validity on an India quote means you eat two weeks of increases yourself. Put simply, quote 7 days. Watch out for the customer who sits on your quote for 25 days and then confirms.

Market Outlook

Watch the 20ft spread and the quarterly Indian import figure. Both are public, both update on a known schedule, and together they tell you whether to hold cargo or lock space.
