Freight Rate Weekly: Europe
Executive Summary
Carriers flagged around $400/FEU hikes on Asia–Europe spot rates around October 19. Yet when you sit down to negotiate, the booked rate moves the other way. On the other side, the Red Sea rerouting keeps leaking capacity back: 63% of deployed Asia–Europe capacity already transits the Red Sea, and over 140 ships have switched back to Suez. Carriers brake with blank sailings — next week Asia–Europe goes from 2 to 8 blanks. Trans-Pacific still holds high.

Overview
Evergreen and Yang Ming both flagged roughly $400/FEU increases on Asia–Europe around October 19. But forwarders say vessels are not full, and the gap between the announced hike and the actual booked rate is wide. Europe spot now sits in a $2,900–$3,500/FEU band.
The hike is a rate-defence move, not a trend reversal. Soft demand, ongoing Red Sea rerouting, and newbuild capacity all point the same way. The increase props up expectations; it does not change the direction.
Bottom line: don't chase the headline number on your short contracts.

Key Details
Drewry's capacity bulletin: next week Asia–Europe has 8 blank sailings announced, up from 2 this week; trans-Pacific goes the other way, 2 next week versus 6 this week. Carriers pull capacity back to catch the tonnage the rerouting releases.
A blank sailing is the carrier's brake. Each service that returns to Suez needs one to two fewer ships to hold the same weekly frequency; carriers announce more blanks to eat the freed slots and hold rates.
Here is a signal you can use: if next week's Asia–Europe blanks fall back, or Suez weekly capacity keeps climbing, Europe's rate band loosens.

Looking Ahead
This is no longer a test. Alphaliner: in the month to October 15, 63% of deployed Asia–Europe capacity transited the Red Sea rather than round the Cape. Linerlytica counts over 140 ships and more than 2,000,000 TEU switched back to Suez since May.
Clarksons is blunter: in the first two weeks of October, Suez weekly box-ship capacity hit 753,000 TEU, the first time above half of pre-crisis levels; the 2023 comparison was 1,457,000 TEU, so that is 51.7%.
Drewry expects Suez to reach 80% of pre-crisis by February 2027 if security holds. Put simply, capacity only loosens from here. The rerouting releases tonnage, and rates drift down — that is hard to stop.
Implications
For exporters, rerouting does not mean instant price cuts; it means sailing-schedule volatility. As service strings shift, ports and dates move. Leave buffer on Europe shipments; do not push your delivery dates onto the sailing edge.
China–Europe DDP lanes are the most sensitive: each ship back on Suez frees one to two vessels per weekly service, nominal capacity loosens, but the switchover-period jitter is yours to absorb.
Section 5
First, next SCFI Europe leg: now $3,557/FEU, +0.28% week-on-week; Mediterranean $4,133/FEU, +0.88%. Hold the $2,900–$3,500 band and the hike is still defending; break below and rerouting starts to show.
Second, Suez weekly capacity: 753,000 versus 1,457,000 TEU, still 704,000 TEU short. Each week that gap narrows, Europe's effective capacity loosens a notch.
Our read: this round of Europe hikes will not last past the first week of November, unless the Red Sea throws a security event that sends ships back around the Cape.
Market Outlook
Drewry expects Suez to reach 80% of pre-crisis by February 2027 if security holds. Put simply, capacity only loosens from here.
